Adopt
a statue
A project aimed at promoting the historical and artistic heritage of Milan Cathedral.
“Adopt a Statue” is the fundraising project launched in February 2020 by the Veneranda Fabbrica Del Duomo di Milano with the aim of contributing to supporting activities to safeguard, enhance and protect the Cathedral’s artistic heritage, giving new life to some of its sculptures through beneficial restoration activities.
The initiative is supported by companies who, through their donations, can ‘adopt’ a statue, helping to finance its cleaning, restoration and maintenance.
When the work is complete, the companies can exhibit the sculptures at their premises. FNM has decided to participate in the project because of its strong bond with the Milan and Lombardy area and its citizens “Adopt a Statue” has also been possible thanks to the collaboration with the Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape Department of the Metropolitan City of Milan.

St. Abdon
Martyr adopted
by FNM
St. Abdon is a Catholic saint who lived in the 3rd century and is generally associated with another saint, St. Sennen. As suggested by his name, Abdon had Persian/Eastern origins, some even thought him to be a nobleman. Although little is know about the lives of the two saints, their names are mentioned in many important texts such as the ‘Depositio Martyrum’, the ‘Martyrologium Hieronymianum’, the ‘Marble Calendar of Naples’, and the ‘Gelasian and Gregorian Sacramentaries’. Having converted to Christianity, Abdon and Sennen were imprisoned during the Decian persecution under the Roman Emperor Decius, who ordered them to offer sacrifices to the idols. Refusing to comply, they were led to the Colosseum where they were exposed to wild animals. The animals were miraculously tamed but not so the gladiators who beheaded the men Today the remains of the two saints lie in St Mark’s Basilica in Rome. Their feast day is celebrated on 30 July.

The statue of St. Abdon Martyr comes from the top of spire AUG 19, on the south side of the Cathedral. The model was made by sculptor Luigi Casareggio while the marble depiction is the work of sculptor Gerolamo Argenti, who completed the statue in 1810. After the Second World War sculptor Nardo Pajella adapted the work, maintaining the subject but changing its appearance and pose. Between 1951 and 1953, Argenti’s statue of St. Abdon was moved to the Cathedral Museum, while Pajella’s version was located at the top of spire G19 where it can still be admired today.
